Song: Strawberry Fields Forever (from the Cirque du Soleil album Love)
Artist: The Beatles (Love album produced by Beatles’ producer George Martin and his son Giles)
Favorite Lyric: It’s getting hard to be someone but it all works out
Significance: I was very skeptical when I heard about a Cirque du Soleil show that was going to muck about with Beatles’ recordings. My set-in-stone opinion was that nobody should muck about with Beatles’ recordings. But with all of the Beatles and Beatle wives on board, plus George Martin and his son at the helm, I had to give it a listen. And I’ll be damned if it’s not an excellent re-imagining of material and re-engineering of sound. While I think most of it is novel, a couple of tunes really struck my fancy, with the Strawberry Fields mashup being my favorite. There was an earlier version of Strawberry Fields Forever on the Beatles Anthology that I preferred to the album version, and now this Love version, which uses some of those early takes, is my favorite. I love how they blend the end of the song with the “Hey-Lah, Hey-Lah-Aloha” from Hello Goodbye and the harpsichord melody from Piggies.
